Renewable Energy Generation up 15% Worldwide in 2007
A soon to be released report from the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century will show that worldwide generation of electricity from renewable sources increased 15% in 2007. Global renewable electric generation increased to 237 GW (gigawatts), excluding hydro power in 2007. Renewables accounted for 5.5% of the planet's total electric power generation.
Renewable Electric Generation Highlights:
- Wind: 93 GW (up 25%)
- Solar Photovoltaic - Grid Connected: 7.8 GW (up 56%)
- Solar Photovoltaic - Other: 3.8 GW (up 52%)
Renewable Non-Electric Energy Highlights:
- Solar Hot Water: 121 Thermal GW (up 17%)
- Ethanol: 11.6 Billion Gallons (up 16%)
- Biodiesel: 2 Billion Gallons (up 33%)
Over $100 billion was invested in 2007 for renewable energy. Wind power received the largest share of investment.
