US House Passes Energy Bill - Increases Gas Mileage
Today the U.S. House passed a comprehensive energy bill that increases gas mileage by 40% and ethanol production as well as require improved energy efficiency standards for lighting and appliances. President Bush is expected to sign it.
Summary:
- Increase CAFE automobile mileage standards from current 25 to 35 MPG by 2020
- Increase ethanol production from current 6 billion gallons to 36 billion gallons by 2022
- After 2015, require 21 billion gallons of cellulosic ethanol be produced from non-corn based sources
- Improved efficiency standards for:
- commercial and government buildings
- appliances
- lighting
